"Juba's Cup" is a work of historical fiction, based on the true story of a runaway slave who eventually homesteaded in Whitman County, Washington, near Rock Lake. The author re-creates Juba's narrow escape from the South and describes the dangers that the black slave encountered, going through the Oregon Territory. Wherever he went, Juba was judged by the color of his skin.
Although the name Juba is fictional, the character was real. Using her extensive historical and genealogical research of the runaway slave, Dow weaves action and romance into a classic American pioneer drama.
