Based on the true story of a wild burro named Pardo who was rescued from the mountains of Arizona and transported to southern New Mexico. Unfortunately, the family who rescued Pardo did not know how to care for or train him.

Alyce Shirleydaughter saw Pardo standing all alone in the hot desert sun. She asked the family if she could adopt Pardo and they agreed. After a few weeks of love and attention, Pardo showed his real personality—he was smart and funny. When he got lonely, he would run to the front door and honk for somebody to come out and scratch his ears!

“I had never considered transplant. No one I knew had done it. I had no personal advice. It seemed dangerous. I was afraid,” recalls the author, then adds, “It’s not easy to take the scary out of scary. Information and conversation sometimes help.”

And that’s what Edith Aileen Noe does in this book about her heart transplant. She approaches her personal experience, in a gentle way, with non-technical information and a friendly (at times humorous) conversation with a reader curious about what it is like to have this life-threatening surgery.

MYSTERY / HUMOR / FINITE EXISTENCE

From Judy Berg’s imagination are eight short stories of mystery, humor, and contemplating our finite existence. She explains: “Many ideas for these stories materialized during the long hours spent as a professional wildlife researcher alone with the natural world . . . .”

Her beloved dog Rusty was the inspiration to write “Rusty’s Nose Knows for Sure.” His curiosity discovers a murder, but his intelligence finds the killer. Taking on the animal’s point of view is an entertaining approach to this adventure in her dog’s life.

Some other stories share this intrigue and fun while others reveal simplicity of life with lovely landscapes of the outdoors.

Weathered Wood: And Other Short Stories follows her award-winning hardcover book The Otter Spirit. For more info, photos, and events visit www.otterspirit.org/weatheredwood.asp.

As a young Christian, Kevin Thorson was a normal, healthy 19-year-old. Music was his life, and he planned to play his guitar and use his talents for God. Abruptly, all seemed to end July 11, 1997.

His mother recalls the words from that dreaded phone call: “Pam, you need to sit down . . . Kevin has been in an accident . . . paralyzed . . . ventilator . . . hospital . . . ” She could only comprehend the bits in between those horrifying words. Kevin was lying paralyzed, attached to a ventilator, with a broken neck, in a foreign country.

“I kept waiting for the happy ending to arrive . . . but I finally took the advice of a dear friend: Write the pain.”

So Pam Thorson finally writes about her teenage son’s tragic accident. From those first agonizing days to the surprising interventions of God that brought Kevin back from the brink of death, he earned the nickname “Miracle in the Making.”

Song in the Night is a story of the Thorsons’ long suffering and God’s tender grace; it is a story of assurance that the family is moving upward and onward. Pam insists that “it’s not about us. It’s about our God . . . Who delights at the sound of His beloved children singing especially during that long, cold night before the dawn.”

Mem is an anointed educator, spiritually grounded in the word of God, inspired to speak God’s word through “Momma’s Little Sermons” to bring peace, blessings, and enlightenment to the reader. This author compiled of 25 cliches that her mother used to say all the time. In order to change the stereotypic picture of cliches, “Momma’s Little Sermons” synonymously uses the word “cliché” with the word “sermon.” A sermon is found on each page followed by a short explanation and a scripture. On the opposite side is a reflection page to provide the reader an opportunity to write down thoughts and insights about the "sermon." With this approach, the reader must “seek to find” the mysteries of life expressed on each page and how these revelations show up in everyday living.

This full-color 128-page hardback book features a unique collection of 28 masks created by artist Peter Sanderson.

His mask-making encompasses a wide range of organic material including flowers, grasses, lichen, and bark. Some of his masks demand more detail and patience than others. For example, the red mask in the Three Faces of Hope is made up of Statice, requiring 61,000 petals alone!

Accompanying each full-color plate of the 28 masks are descriptive verses that capture the spirit and energy that each mask reveals to the reader.

In truth, a mask is a spiritual teacher reading deep into our subconscious as it mirrors and awakens hidden emotions on our path of self-discovery. The artist welcomes us to enjoy and challenges us to grow with the aura and personality of each mask on our journey leading to our own identity and beauty.

Along with this colorful showcase of Peter Sanderson's masks are brief narratives of each mask’s creative process and composition.

This is a continuation of Jo-Lo's stories to Heather Brown when she was eight years old and terribly lonely. To cheer her up, Jo-Lo told her many stories, of which this is the second group. It is better to read the first story because so much of what happens here depends upon the previous stories, including how the Prince came to meet the Princess and his problems with Lord Raisinkatz and how he went about solving them.

My job, as the author, is to repeat Jo-Lo's stories as best I can, hoping Heather will allow me to make some mistakes in the telling, without getting too exasperated. I tried to remember how Jo-Lo spun these adventures to her, but it was confusing how Olivia, Jasper, Raisinkatz, Gwyn-o-cheri and her Prince kept changing so much from what I guessed they were going to do to what they actually did.

What I'm saying is this: It may not have happened quite as exactly as it did, but it's awfully close.

Young reader comments:
"I Love to read your books. YOU gave me happyness. Love: Sarah C."
"I think you should do more books because the Princess and the Beggar is GREAT!!!!! Because I think you are a awesome writer." —Shannon

Wildlife researcher Judy Berg combed the Colorado River while tracking a once state-endangered species, the North American River Otter, in its natural habitat. Her experience resulted into a story that blends researched facts, personal photographs, interpretive illustrations, descriptive poems, Native American folklore, firsthand observations and narration—a blend that elevates this natural history to a class of its own.

The author's research led her on a 6-year pilgrimage following the tracks and scat, slides and tail-drags of this spirited animal on the Colorado River in the Rocky Mountains. From season to season, year to year, she documented a life's journey in Nature while connecting with native American spirituality.

With a curious mind and the gift of a medicine bag, Judy Berg journeys into the otter's world and returns with a venturous natural history story called "The Otter Spirit" to share with mankind.

Winner of NABE Pinnacle Book Achievement Award; Runner-Up of Green Book Festival Awards' Animal Category; received an Honorable Mention for Legacy Non-Fiction in the 2010 Eric Hoffer Awards. .

It is the goal of the authors to offer children and adults a good fantasy-read without the usual violence:“We call this book our Montana Fairytale.”

This story is about a Montana boy named Eric who goes to visit his Aunt Phyllis and Unlce Les on their farm.

There is no TV in the house, and Eric gets bored and looks around for something to do.

His aunt goes to the attic and brings down a book. He sees a dragon sleeping on the front page of the book, but there are no words on the other pages.

He asks his aunt about this and she says, “No, of course, there are no words on the pages, Eric. The dragon has not told you the stories yet!”

As the dragon tells the stories, the words appear on the pages. The words spoken by the dragon are in cinnamon color.

This book has lots of adventure, mystery, and exciting times . . . but NO VIOLENCE therein.

Dale Gilbert Caldwell has dedicated his spiritual life to studying Galatians 5:22-23. He has been a frequent writer and speaker about the elements of the “Fruit of the Spirit.” Dale is a Lifetime Member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada who believes that both hymnody and Galatians 5:22-23 are important parts of religious tradition that have not received the widespread recognition that they deserve.

This book of poetry and hymns was written to fill that void. Dale’s hope is that this book will inspire people to think about the importance of each element of the Fruit of the Spirit in their lives. He believes that this inner reflection will help readers experience a spiritual transformation.

Dale comes from a family of religious leaders from different Protestant traditions. His great-great-great-great-grandfather, Bishop Morris Brown, was the second Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and the namesake of Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. Dale’s great-great-grandfather, Reverend James Asa Brown, was a distinguished senior pastor in the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His grandfather, Reverend Gilbert Haven Caldwell, was a nationally recognized pastor in the Methodist Church. Dale’s father, Reverend Gilbert Haven Caldwell, Jr., has been an international leader of the United Methodist Church on issues of civil rights and social justice.

Cases and Issues for Philippine Comparative Study
Facts, Laws, and Opinions of a U.S. State Court of Appeal

Marcelino C. Maxino, LL.M., Esq. compares the Philippine and U.S. legal systems. He presents 19 actual cases that relate with today’s ongoing issues, including the following:

  • child endangerment
  • intellectual property
  • unlicensed contractors
  • drunk driving
  • self-representation
  • jury nullification
  • corporation contracts
  • search and seizure
  • prior conviction evidence
  • ineffective assistance of counsel
  • change of circumstances
  • parental rights

The presentation of each case is written as two sections: 1) the author’s narrative; and 2) the recorded opinion of the court. The narratives and opinions are formatted to be easily read, but distinctive enough to separate the author’s explanations from the legal records.

In the narrative, the author shows similarities and differences in law for both countries. For example, trial by jury (a system used in the United States which is a common law country) is not used in the Philippines; only trial by judge alone (a system used in the Philippines which is a civil law jurisdiction) is used. Another example is ruling evidence that lies in the gray area of admissibility and nonadmissibility. The Philippine judge can simply rule “the evidence is admitted for what it may be worth” while the U.S. judge cannot make that kind of ruling.

As lead appellate court attorney, Mr. Maxino drafted over 500 opinions for the California Court of Appeal. Before this, he was a Philippine trial lawyer, law dean and professor, and university president. The author immigrated to the United States in 1985 at the age of 47, passing the California Bar Exam in his first attempt two years later.

Cases and Issues for Comparative Study provides a practical resource guide for those interested in learning and understanding how the law works in the United States and the Philippines. Students and practitioners, judges and policy makers, critics and opinion makers, even the general reading public, will find this book handy and unpretentious.

“I guess today is killing day around here.”

Outlaw Ike McGraft was a giant of a man, meaner than a new-made steer. He was so big his horse looked little, and he wore a bright green derby with a red feather stuck in it.

McGraft told his gang he was wearing the green derby because the green stands for his Irish blood and the red feather for his Kiowa blood . . . and no one lives laughing at his hat.

These no-good outlaws and cattle rustlers set up an ambush to wipe out the Texas Rangers and Clay Strong.

Based on the historic Battle of Lost Valley, the story captures the early Texas times with suspense, adventure, and Western justice.

“Just stand right there where you are and maybe you’ll live a little longer!” The barrel of the old man’s shotgun waved in front of Texas Ranger Clayborne Strong and his Cheyenne scout Charley Swift Hunter.

“Two folks was murdered down on the creek yisterdee and you two could’ve done it!”

The Ranger felt shocked hearing that a lady died being cut up. But add to it that a man of the badge was murdered too! It was all so terrible.

Being accused of the double murder did not settle well with Clay Strong. Although he and his Indian partner rode into Dakota Territory to find some gold, he soon found himself replacing the murdered deputy to help find that serial killer.

His efforts were disrupted with suspicion, vigilantes, and prejudice as the Devil’s Eye looked on . . .

"Juba's Cup" is a work of historical fiction, based on the true story of a runaway slave who eventually homesteaded in Whitman County, Washington, near Rock Lake. The author re-creates Juba's narrow escape from the South and describes the dangers that the black slave encountered, going through the Oregon Territory. Wherever he went, Juba was judged by the color of his skin.

Although the name Juba is fictional, the character was real. Using her extensive historical and genealogical research of the runaway slave, Dow weaves action and romance into a classic American pioneer drama.

“I don’t understand how or why I made it through alive.”

At most, a person was allowed to live for 90 days. If someone was lucky enough to last that long, the person was then executed—to be replaced by one of thousands of constant arrivals, who would, in turn, be executed in three months. Benjamin Samuelson is one of few survivors of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando.

This is Benjamin’s story—from his happy childhood in Rumania to the horrors of four Nazi concentration camps to the Israeli struggle for independence—a story of historical significance; countless miracles; and the will to live, with abiding hope, to tell the world of what he had witnessed.

A friend should be radical;
They should love you when you’re unlovable,
Hug you when you’re unhuggable,
And bear you when you’re unbearable.

A friend should be fanatical;
They should cheer when the whole world boos,
Dance when you get good news,
And cry when you cry too.

But most of all, a friend should be mathematical;
They should multiply the joy, divide the sorrow,
Subtract the past, add to tomorrow,
Calculate the need deep in your heart,
And always be bigger than the sum of all their parts.
—AUTHOR UNKNOWN

A friend named Brenda sent this poem to Dot Kirschke, encouraging the author to put her heartfelt feelings in writing. And so, It’s About Friends came to be . . . a book to be shared with those who have friends, want friends, and are friends.

“Keuterville is Keuterville, and claims a booming population of about 52 people, 15 dogs, about 20 cats, and numerous unmentionables. It is here I call home,” writes Delbert (Clem) Nuxoll.

And when Delbert mentions “home,” nostalgic memories of his boyhood are rekindled with thrills, chills, and growing pains of living on the farm beginning in 1933. Here are stories and poems from an ordinary country boy, born and raised in a small house with no electricity but a warm wood stove and family. The author and his youngest sister Myrna write about their 206-acre farm with chickens in the yard, pigs making hogs of themselves, cows and horses, cats and dogs; butchering and harvesting; pocketknives and rifles; railroad trestles and swimming holes; hunting and fishing; and all kinds of trouble that a country boy can’t avoid . . .

“My poetry is focused on nature, our relevance in the universe, and the meaning of time. Words and phrases, expressed in a disciplined style, may convey emotion or create mental images blending into the life experiences of others. Therein lies the measure of an author’s work.”
—Ralph Geralde Lane

Ralph Geralde Lane was born November 24, 1911, in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Grinnell College, where he was editor of the campus humor magazine and where his lifelong passion for poetry was born. During the Great Depression, he hitchhiked across the country in search of opportunities, settling in Southern California, where he married and raised his family. In the collection Earthly Essence and Other Poems, he peers with wit and wisdom through our everyday existence, into the corridors of philosophy and the dim vistas of cosmology, offering new perspectives on our time.

An inspirational biography . . . Grace Jones, artist, designer, and interior decorator, notable not so much for what she discovered of color, beauty, and balance as for how she used her talent. From her base in the Pacific Northwest, she chose clients of diverse natures and helped them achieve the harmony they sought. Along the way, they shared insights, understanding, and lots of laughter. Many lives were enlarged.

Grace was born in the Victorian era of British parents. In childhood, she almost lost herself under pressure to live dutifully and selflessly. She recovered with the help of her adventurous yet wise mother who showed her how to combine creed and creativity. Support came, too, from a man uniquely devoted to her for 65 years.

Nobody saw more clearly how Grace touched many lives than her niece and adopted daughter M.G. Bassett, the author of this book.

In searching for the answer to "Now what?" Martin Z. Mkize uses a wide range of images: the Statue of Liberty, tears, money, diamonds, valentines, big fish in small ponds, cab drivers, the African jungle, the wedding day, and basketball. The comparisons go on and on.

However, he warns about being fooled by some "lousy metaphors" and invites you "to stick around" to see how Martin the Great loves and cherishes the existence of noble life.

His philosophical messages of culture and origins, of notions and motions are serious and important; however, with a subtle style, his humor will make you chuckle with joy, affirmation, and stars in your eyes.

In his poem "There Are Days, or There Will Be Days" Martin concludes: "But what must I say now? I said it all. No way, I am not saying any more!"

After reading an authentic Capricorn’s answer to life and happiness, you will say, "I can see!" without having to say any more because you too will have caught a star.

For that, I got the $7.50 they promised me." True, this was a tough time for Clem Bueché, along with others in his life. But somehow, all those hard times seemed also to be his blessings and the secrets to his success and happiness. How did people, places, and events impact the life of this dedicated family man and devout Catholic in America during the 20th century? The answers for Clement A. Bueché, Certified Public Accountant, are written in his book.

Note: Clem Bueché passed away while cover designs of this book were being sent to him for approval. Although he never saw the final printed book, Clem and his guardian angel are probably rejoicing as they watch their legacy being shared with family, friends, and others across this great land.

"I might joke, but the insides of me are a mess," Caroline Carlyle thought to herself. There she was, a 40-year-old widow and the mother of the bride (their only child), all alone to deal with life and the furniture store business that she and her husband had built together. How her life had changed! No husband and no little girl. How was she going to deal with all the good and evil that will find their way into her new world of a single woman? How could she think of ever marrying again? She loved one man so deeply once. How could she ever love again?

This is a manual, not a textbook, of living with a severe manic-depressive illness. It's a life and death story, divided into three parts of survival and burning alive. The text may be found disturbing and offensive to some readers; nonetheless, this is a real life account from a manic-depressive. The author's purpose, besides saving his own life, is to use his 33 years of manic-depression to educate and support those who face the same chronic problems. Professionals and psychology students may find this a useful handbook. With a literary touch, this author's account is a genuine case study that stands alone on its own merit.

Make no mistake. War is not fun. When a son asked fifty years later about the Korean War, his dad responded by writing the poem "From the Beach to the Reservoir." The realities described in this poem are harsh, and the only way to cope is with humor as the authors express in "the other heroic events." The comical style somewhat helps relieve the pain of war. "The events are humorous," comments co-author Kal Kalnasy. "They were meant to be. If the humor offends someone, I'm sorry. But I'm not sorry for writing about it." Included are 20 Korean War photos from the Marine Corps University Research Archives. Portions of the proceeds will be donated to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

Dissmore of North Dakota, who has been looking over this section, was so favorably impressed that he bought two lots between the Idaho Store and John Pomeroy's and as soon as lumber can be secured in the spring he will put up a building in which he open a general store." -- Kamiah Progress, March 1, 1907. More stories of the immigrant kid, with no means and no background, who remembers with pleasure the kindly spirits that smoothed his path. Once again, as in Book One, the author recalls experiences, ambitions, and people through his illustrations and humor, and describes predicaments while working in his uncle's grocery store in Troy, New York, during the Great Depression; camping with the precocious gang leader Antranik; traveling in Europe during and after World War II; and attending school to become a physician-pathologist. More love and humor found on the pages of this sequel to Book One. Over 80 pen-and-ink illustrations drawn by the author. His playful style in writing and drawing reflects an uncanny refusal to grow up--even at his age!

Look at the pictures and try guessing the proverb or saying. The front of each page has a sketched cartoon that acts out a common saying and the answer is on the back of the page. But beware and don't turn the page too early, because "haste makes waste." If you analyze the pictures carefully, you'll be able to guess the answer. The simple sketches have amazingly accurate clues. Coax yourself into saying the answer aloud by describing what is happening in the cartoon. If you don't try guessing, you're missing all the fun.

Hank Whipple seems like an average hospital physician, specializing in anatomical and clinical pathology--a conscientious, dedicated forensic medicine specialist. But just when life in a small Pacific Northwest town reaches its pinnacle of contentment, an argument with the hospital's chief surgeon leaves him the object of ridicule, accused of alcoholism and incompetence, and summarily demoted. Days later, the chief surgeon is found murdered, without any leads--a flawless murder. And who better to commit such an impeccably conceived crime but a doctor of forensics with the clearest of motives? Dr. Whipple was top suspect and he had to find the real killer before it was too late.

Early hunters and gatherers produced their own tools for hunting and butchering animals. Knives and spearpoints were made from glassy rocks such as flint and obsidian. Stones were pounded and chipped away, leaving a tool with a very sharp edge. Learn about the materials, methods, and products involved in flintknapping. This handbook defines over 60 fundamental terms, with original cartoons on each page, based on the lithic technology classes conducted by anthropologist Dr. Lee Sappington. Index and short bibliography included.
